Rumors have come and gone when it comes to an Apple HDTV. In fact, I’ve started to completely ignore anything regarding this matter because it doesn’t seem logical. Tim Cook has officially changed my view on this subject after he dropped a hint during a big interview explaining Apple’s interest in televition.
Now I’m not saying this definitely means an Apple HDTV is coming or that it’s coming soon, but it does mean Apple is interested. You may think, well Dom, we know Apple is interested. The fact is though, we’ve never had a bigger hint than this one.
During an interview that airs tonight on NBC with Rock Center’s Brian Williams, Tim Cook was asked what Apple’s plan are for the future. Cook answered the question stating Apple’s big plans for your living room.
“When I go into my living room and turn on the TV, I feel like I have gone backwards in time by 20 to 30 years,” Cook said. “It’s an area of intense interest. I can’t say more than that.”
AppleInsider notes:
Cook’s comments are the most aggressive yet in hinting that Apple is working on a television set — a product that has been rumored to be in the works for years. Previously, the CEO has also used the words “intense interest” to refer to its Apple TV set-top box, an existing television accessory that streams movies, TV shows and other content.
It’s very true that this could just mean Apple has plans to revolutionize the already popular Apple TV set-top box, but I guess we’ll have to wait and see. I think Apple wants to take its time in this area. If they went all-out on a TV set, rushing it to the market, it would more than likely flop. I don’t think Apple intends on failing at whatever Tim Cook was talking about.
