Progressive technology. It is what we desire. We have smartphones in our pockets that rival the power of home computer setups 3 or 4 years go. Miniaturization of components keep pushing the boundaries of what is possible on a mobile device. We marveled over many devices being thin and powerful before but never like this one. Popular Chinese manufacturer Oppo introduces the new R5 claiming it to be the thinnest smartphone ever made. The R5 boasts an impossibly thin 4.85mm profile made of a combination of high quality metal and glass.
When I held the Oppo R5 for the first time it was almost surreal. I just couldn’t believe how thin it was but also how good it felt in the hand at the same time. The design is more like a hybrid of Oppo’s classic design and a Apple iPhone 5S. For how thin the device is it boast some heavy duty specs including a Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 Octa Core processor, 2GB of RAM and a 13MP Sony made camera sensor capable of 4K video recording.
My real concern here is the smaller 2000 mah battery and the lack of a 3.5 mm headphone jack. There is an adapter that can be used through the micro USB port but many will not be happy with this omission. Is overall thinness worth sacrificing useful features on a new modern day mobile device? Is shock factor worth the giving up something as crucial as battery life? Watch as I take a first look at the thinnest smartphone in the world: The Oppo R5.
