Columbia Records announced today that Adele has become the first artist to rack up double platinum sales on the iTunes store. The wildly successful singer/songwriter sold an incredible 730,000 copies of her album “21” within a week of receiving 6 awards at this year’s Grammys. The album has been purchased on iTunes an astounding 2 million times in the last year.
Adele has also sold over 16 million singles off the album in the US alone. She is the first artist ever to achieve such digital success. Her 6 Grammy awards at this year’s show tied Beyonce for the most ever won by a female artist in a single year. Her 6 awards also tied her with rock legend Eric Clapton for the most Grammys ever won by a British artist in a single year.
Her album “21” also spent 21 consecutive weeks on the Billboard Top 200 chart which is the most consecutive weeks at number one by any female artist in Billboard’s history. Adele was on vocal rest for several months leading up to the Grammys after an extensive vocal surgery. She thanked her doctors on stage after tying Beyonce’s record.
Congratulations to Adele. It’s always nice to see people overcome adversity and reach milestones that have never been reached.
You can snag a copy of Adele’s hit album “21” on the iTunes store for $10.99.
