Earlier this month reports came out showing that Apple had actually filed to acquire ownership of the domain name, iPhone5.com. Apple filed the claim with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), to take ownership of the domain which hosted nothing more than an abandoned forum…
The former owner of the domain argued that the site was, “not endorsed, sponsored, nor otherwise affiliated with Apple,” and that it was “for the sole purpose of entertainment and knowledge.”
But as always, Apple walks away with exactly what they wanted. The Cupertine-giants did the same with the iPhone4.com and iPhone4S.com domains as well.
This doesn’t really mean that we’ll see a new model name “iPhone 5,” but it does mean that Apple is taking steps to ensure a troll-free launch of their next-generation smartphone. More than likely it’s going to be named the NEW iPhone.
