Yesterday, AT&T began to allow out-of-contract customers to unlock their iPhones for use on different carriers. This has been big news lately since prior to this you’d need a third party SIM mod, or Jailbreak.
In a PDF document sent to eligible customers, AT&T describes four simple steps to unlock a users iPhone (seen above). An Unlock code from Apple is what’s necessary to successfully unlock the phone. The whole process is administered through iTunes.
The instructions tell the user open iTunes, plug in their iPhone, back up the phone, then restore the iPhone using iTunes. After following those steps in combination with the given Unlock code, the iPhone will be unlocked for use on any carrier.
AT&T also includes a link to an Apple support document, should any problems come up during the initial unlock process.
Once the iPhone unlock process had successfully completed, after a restore the user receives a friendly message, “Unlock Complete. Congratulations, your iPhone has been unlocked. To set up and sync this iPhone, click Continue.”
