[Rumor] Low-Cost Hybrid Plastic/Metal iPhone Cominig In Late 2013

There have been many reports that Apple is readying a cheaper iPhone. A new rumor from Digitimes suggests that Apple will be releasing a cheap iPhone made of plastic or a “chassis mixed with plastic and metal, with the internal metal parts being able to be seen from outside through special design” to keep costs down.

Via Digitimes:

The sources pointed out that the related upstream components for the entry-level iPhone are currently going through validation and the actual product may show up in the market in the second half of 2013.

Would this be a step backwards for Apple? This would obviously be similar in build quality to an iPhone 3GS, but is a cheaper iPhone alternative that important to the market? What would the price point be? Would this iPhone be cheap subsidized or unsubsidized? I think these are all questions that need to be answered.
